Old Mart Gym Member of the Month, Meet Kate

At the Old Mart Gym, part of the Maud Village Trust, our Members of the Month celebrate the people who make our community welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring. With support from George Sanderson, we are proud to share the stories behind the members who show what is possible with the right support and determination.

This month, George spoke with Kate, whose quiet determination and positive attitude make her a truly inspiring part of our gym community.

Kate, aged 43, describes herself as friendly but naturally quite shy. Despite living with a visual impairment and a rare genetic condition, she has built an active routine that keeps her moving, connected, and confident.

Her journey began around three years ago when she first joined a walking group run through the Centre. Encouraged by staff and reassured that she would be supported, Kate gradually began trying other activities. Since then, her confidence has grown and she now attends the gym three days a week.

Kate takes part in a wide range of activities, including Pilates, gym sessions, line dancing, and boxing. Her motivation to stay active comes from managing her health condition, which affects appetite and weight regulation, and from a determination to maintain her independence.

For Kate, the most important part of the Old Mart Gym is the welcoming environment. She says she has never been told she cannot take part because of her disability, something that has not always been her experience elsewhere. Instead, she has found encouragement, patience, and practical support that allows her to take part in ways that work for her.

She is especially proud of simply getting involved and trying new things, particularly given her limited vision. Over time, she has achieved movements she never thought possible, including advanced Pilates exercises and strength progress such as lifting heavier weights.

Kate says the gym has become like a second home. It gives her structure, social contact, and a positive focus, helping her avoid the isolation that can come from spending too much time alone at home.

When asked what advice she would give to someone who feels they are not able to join a gym, her message is simple, come along and give it a go. Everyone can do something, whatever their age, ability, or starting point.

Stories like Kate’s reflect what the Old Mart Gym is all about, creating an inclusive space where people feel supported, confident, and part of a community. Her journey is a powerful reminder that with the right environment and encouragement, barriers can become opportunities.
